2011年，在芝加哥大学北京中心召开了“第二届古代墓葬美术研究国际学术讨论会”。这次会议由芝加哥大学东亚艺术研究中心、中央美术学院人文学院与北京大学视觉与图像研究中心三家主办，由芝加哥大学北京中心与湖南美术出版社协办。作为一系列“双年会议”中的第二场，这次会议的一个主要目的是为中外学者建构一个学术平台，围绕着“墓葬美术”这一主题进行持续的交流和讨论。这次会议对“墓葬美术”的概念也做了广义的界定，不仅包括墓葬出土的艺术品，而且涵盖了墓葬的整体设计、墓葬中不同视觉和物质形式的配置、墓葬所反映的礼仪、宗教和文化因素以及墓葬的发现和研究史。而巫鸿、朱青生、郑岩主编的这本《古代墓葬美术研究（第2辑）正是这次会议一个总结和成果。》
