《综合教程》前四册旨在帮助高校学生在中学英语学习的基础上，进一步提高和完善“听”、“说”、“读”、“写”、“译”诸方面的基本技能，实现《大学英语课程教学要求》规定的“一般要求”的教学目标，并向“较高要求”的目标过渡。第五、六册则协同《视听说教程》、《阅读教程》、《快速阅读》和《写作教程》的第五、六册引导学习者实现“较高要求”的教学目标。

本册为第六册。在编写中，继续坚持“聚焦学习者”、“聚焦文本”的编写理念；在帮助学习者夯实语言基本功的同时，力图指导学习者开展评判性阅读活动，以便将学习者的英语综合应用能力(尤其是阅读和写作能力)提升到较高层次。
