《赵元任全集》力图通过迄今为止所能搜集到的所有作品，全方位反映赵元任先生的学术成果和人文精神。全集依类成卷，预计刊行二十卷，附载若干张光盘。前十卷基本囊括他的全部语言学著作，后十卷分别收录他的音乐著作、中英文译作、《科学》作品、自传、书信、日记、音像制品等。每卷所收著作以首次出版的先后为序，未经出版的著作以写作完成的先后为序，年代不明的排在卷末。《赵元任全集(第4卷上下)(精)》为赵元任编著的其中一卷。

赵元任（1892－1982），江苏常州人，是二十世纪享有世界声誉的人文学者，公认的语言学大师，同时也是天才的作曲家，卓越的翻译家，科学普及工作的先行者，业余的摄影家。
赵元任1910年始赴美留学十年，分别取得康奈尔大学的数学学士和哈佛大学的哲学博士学位。回国后曾先后在清华国学研究院、中央研究院史语所任职，并参与组织方言调查和国语统一运动。1938年后赴美讲学并定居，继续他的研究和著述，在加州大学、哈佛大学等著名学府常年任教，并当选美国语言学会会长。他曾获得海内外几所名校的最高荣誉，包括普林斯顿大学文学博士，加州大学荣誉法学博士，俄亥俄州立大学人文博士和北京大学名誉教授等。
他一生著作等身，择其要者，语言学专著《中国话的文法》、《语言问题》，译著《中国音韵学研究》，方言学著作《湖北方言调查报告》《现代吴语的研究》，音乐著作《新诗歌集》，文学译作《阿丽思漫游奇境记》等，均在海内外享有盛名。

《赵元任全集（第4卷）（套装上下册）》以论文发表时间的先后为序，全面反映了赵元任先生的语言学研究成果。其中既有对以往研究语音学、语法学、方言学成果的厚积薄发，还包括通字方案研究、社会语言学研究、对外汉语教学研究、儿童语言习得研究等方面的创新性研究，这些研究历程在本卷中都有十分显著的反映，占了近四分之三的篇幅。
