Chairs continue to captivate the imagination - even people who are not design aficionados love chairs. To serve this interest, there have been a number of books on classic chairs of the twentieth century. However, contemporary chair design has been largely ignored.
New Chairs offers 67 examples of the more intriguing chairs recently created by designers whose nationalities range from Thai, French, Israeli, American, British, Canadian, Italian and German, to Danish, Lebanese, Brazilian, Polish, Chinese and Japanese. Chairs by famous names, such as the Campana brothers, TomDixon and Marcel Wanders, as well as by lesser-knowndesigners are featured.
Themes examined include the innovative use of materials:both technically advanced and reprocessed as well asreinterpreted traditional ones. There are designs thatexploit new production processes, while others fold orstack in imaginative ways. Others explore variousconfigurations: for example, inflatable or illuminated.
In addition to large-format images of the completeddesigns, New Chairs includes drawings, prototypesand photographs of manufacturing processes - somefurnished specially for this publication. The backgroundinformation accompanying each example iscomplemented by the designers' own words, describinghow they arrived at their solutions.
