The frictional core - and the unlikeliness - of his art is that while it sets itself up as a self-designed system that, with modernist rectitude,ends only when his life does, it is inwardly far more emotional than rational. On a painting-by-painting basis it gravitates towards imperceptible, almost mystic increments within the overall flow of being:unexpected spikes in the psychic graph. The frozen moments White paints imply a before and after, i.e. the larger passage of time.
