赫尔曼·麦尔维尔，19世纪美国著名小说家、诗人。《白鲸》是其众多作品中的典型代表，是全世界公认的世界文学名著之一。《白鲸》因描写了海上航行和纷繁的捕鲸生活，而被誉为“捕鲸业的百科全书”。《剑桥文学史》称之为“世界文学史上最伟大的海洋传奇小说之一”。《白鲸》与福克纳的《熊》、海明威的《老人与海》一起被誉为美国文学史上的三大动物史诗。美国著名的浪漫主义作家霍桑曾盛赞《白鲸》是“一部何等伟大的作品”。美国作家海明威和法国作家、诺贝尔文学奖获得者加缪都十分推崇此书。许多评论家认为《白鲸》是“美国想象力最辉煌的表达”，而这部书也被认为“部分是戏剧，部分是历险故事，部分是哲学探讨，部分是科学研究，部分是史诗”。

Moby Dick，由于它是一头白鲸的名字，所以中文译名为《白鲸》，也译作《莫比·迪克》，是美国文学史上公认的经典文学著作，是一部史诗般的小说，由美国著名小说家、诗人赫尔曼·麦尔维尔编著。

聪明、凶残的白鲸莫比·迪克，经常在海上兴风作浪，夺去了无数捕鲸人的生命。艾哈贝船长也在一次捕鲸中被莫比·迪克咬掉了一条腿，从此发誓一定要报仇雪恨。为了复仇，艾哈贝船长变得独断专行。几经辗转，艾哈贝终于与莫比·迪克遭遇。经过三天追踪，最后他用鱼叉击中白鲸，但船被白鲸撞破，除一位水手得救外，全船其他人全部遇难。
