本教材《美国文学经典教程》借鉴了当代两本重要的美国文学选集：《诺顿美国文学选集》和《西斯美国文学选集》的编写体例，把选文的范围上溯到早期印第安人的民间口头文学，下延至近年来的美国当代文学名著。教材共选编了45位作家的文学作品，按年代把这些作家及选文分为六个部分共45课加以组合。每个部分前面有简明扼要的中文概述，每课再分为短评、选文、题解、关键词和思考题五项内容，并加上了一些必要的生词注释。本教材主要供大学本科生和研究生使用，教学时间大约需要一学期或延至一学年，也可以从各部分中选读若干作家作品进行专题学习。
