Clay and Brush: The Ceramic Art of China, The Collection of the Lowe Art Museum,University of Miami has been an exhibition in planning since I first arrived at the Museum in 1975. At that time the Lowe had a small collection of Chinese ceramics, largely donated by Stephen Junkunc III, a major collector of Chinese art in Chicago. Among the pieces he donated to the Museum were seminal examples from the Song (960-1279) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. At the time he was collecting early archaeological pieces were quite rare. From this core collection, we have been able, through the generosity of many donors and careful purchases, to build a collection that covers the broad history of Chinese ceramics from the Neolithic Period (ca. 7000-1700 BCE) to the 21st century. ...
