此书已印刷8次，颇受师生及读者欢迎，可谓经受了时间的考验。全书用简明的英语写成，采用最新的国际通用音标，对音位理论有初步的诠释，凡此皆有利于学者循序渐进，登堂入室。书中强调在理论指导下进行充分自觉的实践，对节奏、语调与语流从听入手以达于说，给出大量实用的练习，在练习中解决学者的难点。这些都是符合认知规律的。其中尤以练习及听力范读材料，能有效地解决过去语音教学局限于理论传习，缺少实践场地，以空对空的客观困难
