本书主要关注了英语和汉语中的主句现象。英语和其他印欧语言中的主句现象已经有了广泛而深入的研究，然而汉语中的主句现象却少有人注意。中国的语言学家并没有系统研究过汉语中的主句现象，也未给出过令人信服的原因来解释这种。本书研究主要涉及了汉语和英语中条件状语从句，时间状语从句，时间介词短语，叙实补足语从句和名词补足语从句中的主句现象，通过探讨英语和汉语状语从句和补足语从句中主句现象的相似和差异，试图对话题化和高位情态词这两种典型的主句现象在两种语言中不同的句法表现进行解释。
