现代化既是一个世界现象，又是一种文明进步。它不仅改变了18纪以来的世界政治、经济、社会和文化生活，还促进了人类发展、生态文明和国际体系的变迁，同时有助于文化多样性长期存在。世界各国都在开展某种现代化建设，都把实现现代化作为一个发展目标。2022年8月，第四届世界现代化论坛在线上举行，论坛设有“创新与现代化”“创新驱动与现代化”“科技创新与经济发展”“知识创新与社会进步”“开放创新与绿色发展”“科技革命与世界现代化”“现代化的度量衡与中国现代化”等议题，反映了现代化研究的国际前沿和热点。本书是此次论坛主要成果、论文以及对131个国家2018年国家现代化水平的量化评估的选编。
