本书精选周代至清代诗词187首，加以英译与评注，英译遵循“以诗译诗”的原则，评注则介绍诗人生平、写作背景及诗歌的艺术特色。另有各章绪论简述相关时期的历史情况，其诗歌发展的大概脉络等背景知识，反映了华夏民族的优秀品质和美好情怀。
所选篇目中既有苏轼的《念奴娇》、杜牧的《泊秦淮》这样家喻户晓的千古名篇，亦有李渔“莫道班门难弄斧，正是雷门堪击鼓”，或陈子龙“不信有天常似醉，最怜无地可埋忧”等尚未吸引足够目光的沧海遗珠。

卓振英，教授，现任浙江师范大学典籍翻译研究中心首席专家，曾担任汕头大学典籍英译研究中心主任(2001-2006)，兼任中国英汉语比较研究会常务理事、典籍英译学科委员会召集人及全国典籍英译研究会副会长(2002-2014)。已出版《华夏情怀——历代名诗英译及探微》《大中华文库·楚辞》《宋词集萃》《李渔诗赋楹联赏析》《汉诗英译论纲》等著译作13部。
