《普通语言学教程》包括绪论和正文5编。“绪论”简单叙述语言学的历史和它与其他科学的关系、语言学对象、言语行为的内部要素和外部要素、文字表现语言和音位学。第一编一般原则部分主要讲语言符号的性质、符号的不可变性和可变性，以及静态语言学和演化语言学中的种种理论问题。第二编共时语言学分8章，除概述外，分别论述语言系统的结构原则，同一性、现实性和价值，语言价值，组合关系和联想关系（聚合关系），语言的机构，语法及其细分和语法中抽象实体的作用等。第三编历时语言学也分8章，除概述外，分别叙述语音的演变，语音演变在语法上的后果，类比作用，类比与演化，流俗词源，黏合作用，历时的部件，同一性和现实性等。第四编地理语言学部分分4章，分别论述语言的差异，地理差异的复杂情况，地理差异的原因和语言波浪的传播。最后，第五编回顾语言学问题部分分5章，分别叙述历时语言学的两个情景，最古的语言和原始型，重建，人类学和史前学中的语言证据，以及语言系属和语言类型。一般原则和共时语言学两编是全书的核心，对后世产生重大影响的新理论、新方法基本上都集中于此。

费尔迪南·德·索绪尔（(Ferdinand de Saussure，1857-1913），现代语言学奠基者，后人称其为“现代语言学之父”。索绪尔分别于1907、1908-1909和1910-1911年三次教授普通语言学课程，其学生根据课堂笔记整理而成《普通语言学教程》一书，于1916年在日内瓦出版。这部具有划时代意义的著作，提出了全新的语言理论、原则和概念，为其后的语言研究和语言学的发展奠定了科学的基础。
