“任人唯贤”“选贤与能”是中国古代吏治的精髓。本书分别从经、史、子部典籍中选取历史故事进行阐释。第一章阐释任贤的重要性，论述官员贤德与否关系到国家的治乱兴衰、君主的正邪劳逸、以及民风的善恶厚薄。第二章阐释贤才的标准，以贤德之人、孝廉之人、直谏之人、荐贤之人为例进行说明。第三章阐释选贤举能，内容涉及对人才的考察、荐贤的关键，让贤，以及察举制和科举制这两种选贤的制度。第四章阐释任人唯贤，讨论了在任人过程中四个重要的方面，即尊重人才、辨别人才、采纳贤士建议、以及奖赏人才。中国始终遵循贤能治国，贤能政治的影响也持续到今天。从历史中汲取选贤与能的智慧，可为当今选人用人提供有益借鉴。
