本教程共10个单元，每个单元的文章控制在1?000到2?000词之间，均选自英美主流期刊和网站，文章难度循序渐进。话题生动有趣，文理兼顾，例如人类进化、望远镜、意志力、虚荣心等。每个单元结构安排如下：
Understanding the text 注重文章理解，通过大学英语四、六级考试的题型考查学生的阅读理解。同时，通过上下文推测强化文章中重点词汇的理解。
Target academic words 给出50个目标词汇，让学生在阅读文章前对每个词汇的掌握程度进行自我评估。评估测试出自Waring（2002），充分体现学生对词汇不同程度的掌握（从辨认到产出）。
Match & Synonyms & Words with different meanings 设计不同的练习，帮助学生逐个学习和掌握目标词汇的意思，并在此基础上拓展同义词，了解一词多义。
Word families 主要拓展目标词的词族中的各种派生词，在进一步扩大词汇量的基础上学会运用这些词汇。例句练习均选自最新英语主流期刊，例如BBC，The Guardian， The New York Times， The Washington Post等，保证学生了解词汇在真实上下文中的用法。
Multiword units 提高学生对地道的词语搭配的关注，有意识地培养学生使用这些搭配。例句均选自最新英语主流期刊，例如BBC，The Guardian，The New York Times，The Washington Post等，保证学生了解词组的常见用法。
Can you recall the words? 帮助学生回忆本单元中的部分目标词汇，并自己拼写这些单词。
Using affixes 参考Sasao和Webb（2017）根据英国国家语料库编写的最高频118个词缀，删除例词没有出现在AVL的词缀，比如a-，ab-等，剩下的词缀均使用AVL中的词汇讲解。
Using word roots 参考AVL词表中的词汇，同时根据词根的产出性，每课筛选10个典型词根进行理解和推演训练。
本教程适合对象有三类：达到大学英语四级水平的大学生；高中国际班学生；非英语专业的研究生新生。
