该书为“一带一路专题研究系列”第三本《绿色丝绸之路建设的资源环境基础与社会经济背景》的英文版。该书是中国科学院A类先导性专项“泛第三极环境变化与绿色丝绸之路建设”联合攻关项目“绿色丝绸之路建设空间路线图的综合集成研究”的个重要成果。该专著主要分析“一带一路”沿线国家的自然环境基础、社会经济现状、生态系统演变、灾害风险态势、气候变化特征，评估“一带一路”沿线国家与我国的经济连通性、设施连通性，并分析“一带一路”沿线的环境-经济脆弱区，共九章。
